As a typical acid, nitric acid reacts with alkalis, basic oxides and carbonates to form salts, the most important of which is ammonium nitrate. Due to its oxidizing properties, nitric acid does not (with a few exceptions) release hydrogen when it reacts with metals and produces salts that generally have higher oxidation states. For this reason, severe corrosion can occur and appropriate protection is required by the use of corrosion-resistant metals or alloys in the presence of this acid.
